Having spent the last 30 mins listening to Priti Patel speak on various topics đŸ˜¶đŸ˜¶ I can say that if she is ‘putting it on’ (problematic phrase)she is doing it consistently. She isn’t putting anything on. This is her natural public voice. However, her accent is interesting. ... https://twitter.com/robdrummond/status/1254318821323595778
... And worth a little investigation. This would be a great little project for some A Level Eng Lang students. Procedure:
1. Find two or three videos of PP speaking. Ideally in different contexts.
2. Three good features to look at: ING or ‘g-dropping’ (workin for working); ....
... t-glottaling (glottal stop for /t/); l-vocalisation (‘w’ sound in words ending in ‘l’).
3. For each video, count the number of times she uses each feature. But you must also count all the times she *could* have used it. So count every -ING context, and note no. of ‘-in’ ...
... as well as no. of ‘-ing’ endings. Note proportion of ‘-in’ use.
4. For t-glottaling, note context of /t/. Word-final before consonant (‘that car’), before vowel (‘that apple’), before pause (‘...my hat’.) or in the middle of a word (‘matter’) as each behaves differently. ...
5. There are also some considerations for ING, but not as relevant here.
6. When you have the numbers, it’s easy to make some charts in excel 😊
