Very good, this. As Miguel says, there are things beyond the superficialities of trophies. And Newcastle fans, 'can't say they weren't warned.' https://twitter.com/ginolasleftfoot/status/1254335458970083328
This last point is, I think, very important. I've seen a consensus growing that this isn't Newcastle fans fault, which of course is correct, but also that there's not really anything they can or should do and they can't be expected to 'turn their backs on their club.'
IMO, this is a convenient semantic trick. Refusing to attend games or put money in hands of appalling people, or to let those appalling people misuse your club, isn't 'turning your back on your club.' It's fighting for your club.
Just as it was when people boycotted over Ashley. Just as it was when Blackpool fans wouldn't give Oyston a single penny or Charlton fans battled Duchâtelet.
The point here, which Miguel made with reference to Carmela Soprano, is that, however we find ourselves in a situation, we are almost never without agency.
And if that situation benefits us financially yet we know the money is dirty, then we can be judged if we choose the path of least resistance because we have made ourselves complicit with the provider of that money and the means they used to obtain it.
