Munchkin
[Soft ShinKami "Denki's hit by a quirk that turns him into a cat & Shinsou will do everything in his power to spoil him rotten" au bc I've been feeling like shit lately & wanted to work on something fluffy & less plot intensive.]
⚠️There is KrBkDk in this if that bothers you please carry on I rlly don't wanna argue about ships.⚠️
Shinsou should’ve known that his first outing as an official member of class 1-A would go south. Everything was going well until Denki got up to get them all food. The mall was pretty slow for an early Sunday afternoon, and they’ve been taking advantage of it.
Mina has dragged them to nearly every store, Bakugou has bitched the whole time while Kirishima and Midoriya try to pacify him, Denki has used a new pick-up line on anyone who is willing to listen (mostly Sero), and he got to check out music with Jirou.
All in all it’s a great time, and Shinsou is convinced his own bad luck is the only reason it doesn’t stay that way.
Some kid’s quirk goes off for the first time while he’s in line with his mother, and panic ensues.
The group of heroes in training are up in an instance, but it’s hard to see with everyone running. Mall officials try to get everyone in order, and eventually the crowd settles, letting them see what all panic is about.
“It’s… a cat?” Jirou says, crouching down in front of it.
“Oh my God,” Shinsou whispers, “It’s a munchkin.”
Bakugou looks at him like he’s out of his mind, but Shinsou knows he’s right. The yellow cat with a black stripe that’s currently trying to back away from Jirou, is in fact a munchkin breed.
It’s short little legs that it keeps tripping on is a dead give away.
Kirishima comes up behind him and says, “Where’s Denki?”
Midoriya takes a step towards the cat and looks it over.
“I...I think this is Denki,” he says, pointing at the familiar black bolt.
“We’re going to need you all to back away until we assess the dangers of the quirk,” a mall official says, motioning for Jirou and Midoriya to back up.
“Uhh,” Mina says, “We think we know what it does.”

They’re allowed to call Aizawa, who gets everything sorted out after a long, suffering sigh. He even gets a specialist who confirms that the cat is, in fact, Denki.
Shinsou can’t help but feel bad for him, watching him pin his ears back to his head and hiss at everyone around him. It must be terrifying to be a foot big and suddenly in a body that doesn’t feel right.
Because he can’t speak, they have no way of knowing how much of his consciousness is currently present, or if he’s as self aware as a cat is normally. Either way, it completely tears Shinsou up inside to watch the rough way everyone is handling him.
After one of the specialists pulls on his tail, emitting a high-pitched whine from Denki, Shinsou yells, “Enough!” and snatches the cat from their makeshift table.
The specialist rolls her eyes and turns to discuss things with Shinsou’s father as he coos to the cat in his arms and apologizes on her behalf.
Denki is the calmest he’s been through all of it in Shinsou’s hands, and the usual pride from gaining the affections of a finicky cat makes him grin.
The rest of the Bakusquad (plus Midoriya) coos and calls his name, but Denki keeps his wide, pitiful eyes on Shinsou.
He tries not to be too smug about it.
Eventually, Aizawa comes to convene with them.
“The quirk Denki was hit with is too new and underdeveloped for him to be stuck like this permanently, but it may be a few days to a few weeks before he returns to normal.
We contacted his parents, but they have no idea how to take care of a cat, so…” Aizawa trails off, giving Shinsou a meaningful look.
“I’ll take care of him,” he promises.
“Like Hell you will!” Bakugou steps in, getting in Shinsou’s space.
Aizawa lets out another one of his long, suffering sighs. “You barely know him - he’s much better off with one of us!”
Like always, Kirishima and Midoriya jump in to soothe their hotheaded boyfriend.
“Uh, Kacchan, you’ve never had a cat before,” Midoriya reasons.
“Yeah,” Kirishima jumps in, “and Shinsou was able to recognize the breed on sight, so clearly he knows his shit.”
“Plus,” Aizawa says, intervening, “we have three cats at home, meaning we already have the items necessary for temporary cat care, and Shisnou appears to be the only one of you Denki can stand right now.”
They all look to Denki, who is purring in content in Shinsou’s arms.
Shinsou has him cradled like a baby, and he doesn’t seem to mind one bit.
“Fine,” Bakugou spits, “but if you hurt him, I swear to God, I will-”
“I’m not going to hurt him,” Shinsou says, frowning at the very idea. “I’m a good cat dad.”
“If you have to say you’re a good cat dad, you probably aren’t,” Bakugou says, and Shinsou sticks his tongue out at him. “You lookin’ for a fight?”
Bakugou’s quirk pops in his hands threateningly, as he looks at Shinsou gleefully at the promise of a fight.
Kirishima facepalms while Midoriya shakes his head, and Jirou rolls her eyes at the display. Mina and Sero just watch in amusement.
Shinsou guards Denki with his body just in case, but Aizawa stops the fight before it can start.
“Enough,” he says, and Bakugou scoffs. “Denki’s been through enough today as it is, and now you want to fight in front of him?”
They all turn to look at the cat, who’s watching them with his ears pinned back again.
Shinsou nuzzles his cheek against the top of his head in apology, and eases some of the tension in the feline's body.
“Go back to the dorms, all of you. Shinsou, come with me. We can grab some stuff from home for Denki.”
Shinsou nods and waves goodbye to the rest of them as he follows his father out of the mall’s emergency infirmary.
“I am a good cat dad,” Shinsou reiterates, scratching Denki’s cheek with his fingers.
Aizawa makes a small disbelieving noise, but pats his head and says, “You are.”
