For fans of historical military analogies:

Flattening the curve is Dunkirk.

Planning for the evacuation started on 20 May 1940, and it was completed on 4 June. 16 days in total. Just over 1/3 of the British vessels involved were sunk.

A vaccine, & return to normality, is D-Day
D-Day took 13 months to plan. It involved over a million ground troops, thousands of ships, tens of thousands of aircraft, the invention of whole new technologies [Mulberry, Pluto], and Eisenhower was still afraid it would not work.
So afraid, so stressed, that when he wrote out the note in which he took personal responsibility for failure, he forgot which month it was.

Who do we have who can shoulder that burden, and succeed now?
