On the CORONAsafe app:

The government asks us to trust them regarding this app.

Yet the government has never given us any reason to trust them in matters such as this, and has given us any number of reasons to distrust them.

(Thread)
Starting with he PM personally: I& #39;ve yet to see compelling evidence that he has ever deliberately and voluntarily told the truth, ever.

The government he runs was elected on a series of lies: nonexistent death taxes etc.
Latest in a series of LNP governments elected on lies: "No Cuts to Education, No Cuts to Health..", 2014 budget etc.

LNP governments have presided over a series of technical failures (eg. Censusfail, Centrelink failure under load)..
..lies about them (eg. Stuart Robert) and tech-mediated illegalities (eg. Robodebt) and horrors (eg. Indue card). They have exercised scope creep over surveillance powers: metadata access justified as purely for counter-terrorism swiftly devolved to local councils for parking..
..and littering fines. The government itself feels no compunction accessing and using/leaking personal information against percieved enemies (eg. Andie Fox).
Even IF the app can be verified to do no more than the government says, and legislation governing it seems safe and appropriate, those are not guarantees. The government has given itself power to secretly demand technology changes to add surveillance..
to IT systems, and to imprison anyone who discloses this. Legislation made can be changed and expanded - and the ALP& #39;s track record says they will *always* allow the government to do this.
If illegal access is made a crime, and such a crime is detected, under this government I have no confidence at all that the AFP or state police would investigate such a crime if it were committed by, well..
..the kind of person they have no interest in investigating. They have well-established form in this regard. And even if they did, LNP Attorneys General have given me no confidence that prosecution for such a crime would proceed. Their AGs also have form.
Nor am I sure that Australian legislation is much beyond moot: CORONAsafe uses AWS for storage. Even if (as they insist) they use on-shore in-Oz storage, I believe that, as a US company, Amazon is required to disclose to the US govt. under their Patriot Act.
Then, under intel sharing arrangements, there seems nothing to prevent that info flowing back to Oz from the US.

I have a number of other concerns: people who can& #39;t afford phones, people without app-capable phones, impact on battery life, need to keep bluetooth switched on..
..need to keep the app active under iOS and a bunch of other stuff.

Nonetheless and *despite* all this, I am still contemplating downloading the app and using it diligently.
Not immediately, and not before some level of technical and legal assessment. But I& #39;m still thinking about it. I& #39;m not sure if that makes me civic-minded (as I& #39;d like to think) or weak-minded (something else).
