Good morning!

I’m Zlata.

In Ireland we have been under the siege of Covid-19 since 12 March.

Days are rolling fast, and I will be sharing some things that have been in my mind and around me in the second siege of my life.

#Euresilience
The first siege being that of Sarajevo in 1992 when I was 11 years old.

At that time I kept a diary which kept me sane and became a record of how we lived under the siege together with our family, friends and neighbours.

Today, we tweet!
The start of this second siege was hard - I usually don't think about the previous experience much on a daily basis.

Yet, as things were heating up, memories of the early days of the war started flooding back in.

Schools stopped, the invisible enemy was outside and we were staying inside, in an attempt to keep safe.

The lack of any knowledge how long it will last.

Who will be the first person I know that has been 'hit'?
Yet, within days, I had transitioned & was calm.
I've got this.
It was like getting back on the bike. I just needed to recalibrate back into it.
And then sail along, as mindfully as possible, with some caution & lots of hope.

Memories of a poem given to me - All Things Pass
Back in 1992, we drew strength from being together, and sharing everything from powdered milk to jokes.

The isolation away from my parents, friends, colleagues is hard.

But this time I have electricity and food and water and Zoom and WhatsApp.

I miss hugs but I have Netflix
The amazing community spirit that grew did not surprise me so much, again it was a reminder of 1992.

Ireland quickly expressed its community spirit and resilience in initiatives such as https://localsupport.ie/  with over 8000 volunteers signing up

This time, I have a 10 mth old. Will her first bday happen in lockdown?

My first pair of shoes was given away to a refugee baby at the start of the war.
Will my girl now be getting her first shoes from someone else?

My local #freecycle group is showing so much generosity now
