Was asked by @choiszewing how I do #timemanagement @onfido and realised it's codified:
1. 2h per week non negotiable for my direct report. Performance conversations are separate meetings. Early career #productmanagers need time to work through problems with others.
2. #Hiring. Free slots are always priority for interviews. Hiring managers and talent partners can book directly in my calendar without asking. Hiring is an investment in the team that takes a long time to come to fruition. @eamonjubbawy talks about putting hiring in the oven.
3. Next is for customer meetings. Sales and account managers can book directly in any free spots in my calendar. Being in front of customers is crucial to successfully understanding their problems. Regardless of the agenda I always put in a couple of #discovery questions.
4. Ceremonies and problem solving with my cross-functional team come next. All items above have priority over this unless I'm blocking the team.
5. On exception I'll block out some focus time. Most of my blocks of focus are spent on time sensitive items like presentations to the exec team or external events.
Why this works for me
- Trust: I trust talent partners, sales and account managers to set agendas with candidates and customers, and leverage my time effectively. I give quick feedback when this fails.
- Style: I work best with others and prefer to work through problems together.
- Product line maturity: There are relatively few fires in my line of business, which means whatever is left in my calendar is used for strategic and discovery work.
- Customer-centric and empowered cross functional team: Our engineers and machine learning researchers @Onfido often join customer calls with me, and have a good understanding of their problems. This massively reduces the likelihood of me being a blocker on decisions.
