When in captivity as a Prisoner of War during World War 2, it was not about war or prison camp experience that this IFS Officer wrote about. Instead he wrote on Working plans for Eucalyptus, Teak & Cashew ! This is the story of Robert Browne, aka ‘Quintus'.1/4
After fighting in World War 1, he joined the Indian Forest Service in 1920 &
served the next 20 years in Madras Presidency. When World War 2 broke out he, despite his age, volunteered for military service & was sent to Malaya where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese.2/4
In Malaya, he was sent to work on the 'Death Bridge'- immortalized in the classic film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. There he secretly scribbled his story on scraps of paper, stuffed them into bottles & hid them in graves he had dug. He risked getting caught and execution.3/4
But what he left for posterity was a splendid record of forestry practices in Madras Presidency. Post war, he returned to India. He retired in 1947 & passed away in 1973. In 1981, his daughter published his scribblings during war. We are blessed such a man walked our forests 4/4
