As the UK enters its fifth week in isolation and the Cabinet is split, the alarming side effects are mounting: abuse, paedophilia, depression, anxiety, scant cancer treatment and financial ruin.

Mel Clarke suffered domestic abuse for 15 years. She says the lockdown is “absolute hell” for those in a similar situation.

"Now it’s so much harder to run away... some women are terrified, they’re going to bed at night crying, feeling very alone." https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
The Met are arresting 100 people a day for domestic violence. @RefugeCharity has seen a 49% increase in calls to its helpline and a 417% rise in website traffic.

“Isolation alone doesn’t cause abuse. but it can compound existing abusive behaviours.” https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
One Whitehall official on the next lockdown decisions on May 7:

"I worry about where the country and society will be once everyone opens their front doors and emerges from weeks in hiding…I fear some of our deepest problems might only just be starting.” https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
. @VictimsComm on the lockdown:

"Victims are facing a deadly disease outside and sometimes deadly abuse inside. This is an epidemic within the pandemic: nobody is in any doubt that abuse cases are rising — and far higher than what is being reported." https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
. @IWFhotline has found a three fold increase in the number of people seeking paedophilic content since the lockdown began.

"We are getting scared by some of the trends we are witnessing."

The IWF is finding new content generated from homes “every day”. https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
. @NSPCC has also seen a spike in demand for its services.

Since the corona crisis began, it has delivered 2,800 counselling sessions - including 363 in the first week of April alone for children suffering physical, sexual or emotional abuse. https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
Doctors and ministers are worried that seriously ill people aren’t going to A&E due to the lockdown.

FT analysis shows 30% drop off in emergency attendance. St Thomas’ Hospital in London has seen a 80% drop off in in minor A&E incidents.

There is much concern at the top of government about “avoidable deaths” due to the lockdown. But measuring deaths is unreliable until more testing has taken place.

Latest ONS figures suggest 20% of excess deaths this year are *not* due to Covid-19.

. @TorstenBell warns of the health impact of “economic trauma”

“There’s a very strong relationship between unemployment and wellbeing, as well as mental and physical health. Lasting high unemployment will have a significant effect on the country’s health” https://www.ft.com/content/0ccaac50-854c-11ea-b555-37a289098206
