i hate when people disrespect voodoo voodoo isnt just a hobby one picks up on the side of the road it’s a lifestyle that’s filled culture and history
the western media loves to associate voodoo/ vodou with evil and that along with the diaspora of people that practice it makes it difficult to form communities and pass on the culture that surrounds vodouists in future generations
a lot of the struggle in preserving the culture also has to deal with the method in which the traditions are passed down which is orally, with the internet its easier to keep an accurate account of sacred texts and practices but it’s still not a preserved as other religions
the history has always been surrounded by activism aswell. haitian vodou was used as a force to help unify haitians against the colonizers during the fight for independence and is very inclusive and progressive compared to many of the major prominent religions
also NOT ALL FORMS OF THE PRACTICE ARE THE SAME it varies with the region. for example many of those who practice haitian vodou come from the dahomeyan ethnic groups of west africa but voodoo from louisiana has origins coming from the kongo
side note: just because you have an infatuation for witchcraft from all the things you’ve read and binge watching american horror story DOESN’T mean you’ll ever have the range understand what it means to practice voodoo. your love for the culture doesn’t make you part of it
but anyways happy 4:30 am may this thread serve as a social paradigm for the commonly held beliefs towards vodun
