when you raise your arm, your scapula rotates in a very precise manner & your rotator cuff muscles rotate your humerus & clavicle, and this is so important that if it DOESN’T happen then your supraspinatus muscle gets caught behind a bone, leading to agony
raise your arm straight ahead of you. with your other hand, feel your collarbone on that side. notice that slight and subtle rotation? now feel your humerus (long arm bone). feel it rotate?? those small rotations are what stand b/w your arm functioning normally and extreme pain
when you put on a t-shirt, you lean forward slightly to pull it down over your back. that leaning forward is what allows you to reach back to pull down your shirt. same thing when you put on a sweater. threading your arms into the sweater usually requires you to sit up a bit.
try putting on a sweater or cardigan normally. then put it on without curving your back. notice how much harder it was? that’s called anterior pelvic tilt & lateral weight shifting. that movement is what stands b/w your grandmother putting on her own jacket vs asking you to help
that same subtle movement (along with some arm movements) is what is required to clean yourself after you go to the washroom. if you couldn’t do that movement, you would probably need help to wipe yourself, and that’s usually a major factor as to why someone enters long term care
any one of these muscular movements - and a thousand others - can be affected by something like a stroke or brain injury, which can happen to anyone (yes, even to a teenager). so this Ramazan, let’s be grateful for our beautiful and remarkable bodies
and let’s promise to treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve 🧡 in service of good and of God
