A day before the first patients arrived, I got to visit the Changi Exhibition Centre which has been repurposed to be Singapore’s third community isolation facility http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
The sprawling 108,000 sq metre facility - which is home to the biennial Singapore Airshow - will house nearly 4,400 early and recovering COVID-19 patients. Most of them are expected to be foreign workers http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
Many volunteers were seen hard at work as they worked quickly to furnish the living quarters of the patients - I even caught sight of a zonked out volunteer in one of the rooms http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
The facility is divided into three zones: red, yellow, and green. Patients will stay in the red zone where their living quarters are. This is what the ‘rooms’ in a sector look like. Each room has 6-8 beds http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
Patients will have access to WiFi, fans, power sockets and storage cabinets. On arrival, they’ll also receive this welcome kit which has toiletries, hand sanitiser, face masks and an oral thermometer, among other things http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
Also, any personnel entering the red zone has to don personal protective equipment (PPE). They’ll have to enter and exit via the yellow zone, where disinfecting processes occur so that nothing is carried into the safe area - the green zone.
Some pretty cool technology is being utilised in the facility to reduce the risk of infection too: volunteers will be able to speak to patients in their native languages via roving telepresence robots; doctors will be able to remotely do teleconsultations with patients
And the coolest of them all - food delivery robots! They eliminate the need for more people to enter the red zone and are able to efficiently and quickly cover the vast area of the red zone http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
Here’s more about the cool tech and measures that were taken into consideration for each patient’s safety and comfort during their stay: http://cna.asia/2x8BlUy
