Minister Hunt is, for reasons that remain a mystery, attempting to explain how the covid app works.
Mr Hunt is reading out a list of health organisations he's lined up to say people should download the app.
I didn't catch any tech, privacy, or civil society groups in that list.
Disease Detectives! Do they get a special badge?
They've dialled up the urging to 11. They're clearly worried that people are worried about the app.
Head of the nurses and midwifery association actually says the app is not a panacea. Finally!
"I'm not a tech expert, but apparently it uses Bluetooth handshake, which is the only handshake we're allowed" mild chuckling ensues
Hunt just said that there were "others" who might have wanted to use the data for other purposes, but the national cabinet(?) told them no.
"The Attorney-General will introduce legislation in the next Parliamentary sitting week to establish a strict legal framework for information handling in the App"
More laws coming.
"an initial notice which is provided to individuals before they agree to their Registration Information being uploaded to the National COVIDSafeData Store"
It seems there's an initial signup process that registers you with a central datastore.
That's not the same as "all the data stays on your phone until you test positive and consent to a data upload".
"A process for users to update or correct their registration information in the National COVIDSafe Data Store will be implemented."
"We now cross to a political reporter" again for reasons that remain a mystery.
Ah, apparently the reporter feels their role is to do PR for the government.
There are some very broad assertions being made by the reporter here without specific reference to what anyone at the press conference actually said. That's… well, it's a novel approach to reporting.
Generally you at least hedge by saying stuff like "this is my understanding" or "it appears they meant X" but it seems that old-fashioned approach has been abandoned in this brave new world of modern media.
Do editors who correct these early-career missteps by inexperienced reporters no longer exist?
I mean, it's hard to know what to do if no one teaches you. I never went to J-school, so I don't really know what I'm doing.
