The Californian Diaspora

The Californian Diaspora is part of a larger diaspora from high cost of living places to low cost of living places.

An interesting side effect is that blue state people are moving to red states, and turning them into swing states

ok it turns out California is GIANT

there are 40 million Californians

more than the 21 smallest states' populations combined

the next most populous state is Texas, population 30 million

more Californians move to other U.S. states each year than vice versa

however, California continues to have steady immigration from other countries

this is kinda nuts to me given how hard it is to get a visa to immigrate to the u.s.

whereas people from neighboring states can just drive here

Probably because: highly educated people move to California

Whereas young poor people leave California

And other states are poor compared to California, so the rest of the U.S. population can't afford to move here
