It’s definitely really wild going from playing FF12 to FF7R. People were making a lot of hay about it being like FF13 because of the stagger bar, but honestly I feel like 12’s the real missing link between 7 and 7R with regards to how the action continuously flows
Also I’m halfway (probably?) thru now and I’m more convinced than ever that the stagger bar is superfluous. It matters in SOME random encounters, but most end too quickly for it to matter, and it’s irrelevant during boss fights because the cutscene phase changes always reset it
I mean, to be fair, it would not be a Final Fantasy game if the combat didn’t have at least one unnecessary system that’s not worth paying attention to, despite the fact that every other system comes together in a way that feels really fun and satisfying anyway
