Friends who& #39;ve been trying to develop a reading habit during this #lockdown, here are my 2 cents from having tried to read a book every week last year. Hope you will find this helpful! #reading #books https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="📚" title="Books" aria-label="Emoji: Books"> (1/10)
First things first, let& #39;s strategise! Try to commit to a reading goal for this year. You have 8 more months. If you haven’t read any books in the last year, start with a goal of 4 books a year. That would be 1 book every 2 months. (2/10)
If you read 4 books last year, make it 8. That would be a book every month.
If you did a book a month last year, make it 16. That would be 2 books a month.
Goal setting (excluding the execution) sounds so much fun and math right? https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😁" title="Grinning face with smiling eyes" aria-label="Emoji: Grinning face with smiling eyes"> (3/10)
So now that you& #39;ve committed to a goal - it& #39;s a nice forcing function to keep you going. But you know what& #39;s better? A forcing function that& #39;s made public. Tell your friends about your goal! Or like me, you could use @goodreads #2020 #challenge to do it. (4/10)
Now, how difficult can this get? It& #39;s going to be hard https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😓" title="Face with cold sweat" aria-label="Emoji: Face with cold sweat">. Reading would require your time and attention. But remember this - struggling to make progress with a book doesn& #39;t make you any less of a reader. It& #39;s just that reading can get hard with some books, and easy with others.
Since it& #39;s going to be hard, try to plan for it. For example, try to keep some time for reading every day. I ended up blocking an hour every day for reading and it wasn& #39;t enough to get to my 52 books goal last year. But like @peterthiel said, "A bad plan is better than no plan".
When I request you to plan, your main plan shouldn& #39;t be taking a book with you while going to bed or when going to take a poop. Give undivided attention and time that you& #39;d have otherwise allocated for something important to you (work, Netflix, anything). (7/10)
Now while you& #39;re at it, prepare for your plan getting derailed. That& #39;s okay. Some books would take more time, and the others would take less. There are months when I ended up reading just 1 book and months when I read more than 8 (towards the goal of 52). So just keep showing up!
Last but not the least, try to find some time to reflect on what you learnt from a book. You& #39;ll love doing it. So all the best! As the Chinese proverb goes, "Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still." Keep at it slowly and you& #39;ll enjoy the process! (9/10)
