I will never understand completely the experience of any women, but being on this campaign trail for like 9 months with @sarahforpdx, the level of open misogyny I see is just so far beyond what I could have ever expected.
The erasure of everything she has accomplished in life and in this campaign coupled with people turning a blind eye to her obvious brilliance. We as a society just nit pick every detail of a woman candidate but her opponent is breaking the law and that’s just okay.
People are constantly critiquing Sarah for being too “bombastic” or “loud” titles that just would not be put on a man. Let alone any bombastic men in this race. Sarah being opinionated and speaking truth to power is seen as a liability.
The amount of comments we get, even from the left, that she doesn’t come off as nice enough. Or comment upon her clothing choices, demeanor, appearance, or smile. Seriously our opponent switches between men’s warehouse spokesman and rich hipster but Sarahs outfits get criticism.
The fact that media and establishment figures don’t take her as serious as they did even Jules Bailey despite her having the most donors, most funds, most volunteers, most policy proposals, best campaign by far.
The fact that she has a male opponent who is allegedly running against the mayor who has been so triggered by sharing the stage with a competent woman that he’s made it his mission to focus his entire campaign on Sarah. That’s not normal. And no one speaks tf up about it.
The fact that in our debate prep and before public appearances we have to dedicate staff time to discussing outfits, talking about security for our candidate, worry about her stalkers, get her makeup done. But Ted strolls in and hasn’t even done the policy prep?!?!?
We spent an entire day of our campaign getting a judge to grant a stalking order against one of the mayors previous staffers after numerous death threats. We had to cancel campaign events after a bomb threat from our opponents previous staff.
There is a whole publication in Portland that decided its coverage was going to be about the campaign cyber bullying, and press releases from other campaigns but yet never once covered her events, policies, or literally anything of actual journalistic value.
Of course when endorsements came along they literally wrote “we should have given Iannarone’s a fair shot” and then endorsed white men in every race that they could.
The mayor gets to run an entire campaign on illegal contributions which should be an enormous scandal, has failed to make anything he ran on better, and doesn’t represent everyday Portlanders but sure let’s criticize his opponent for not looking at the camera nice enough?
Seriously, this woman has put out the most comprehensive policy proposals of my lifetime in a mayors race. Yet people will be like “oh ya that’s the lady who wants to force me to bike” as if any work she does or words she actually says don’t matter at all.
Anyways, we’re going to win. But it’s going to be not just because we have the better candidate and the better campaign but because Sarah jumped ten times higher and ran ten times faster just to get where the millionaire timber baron lawless mayor got from privilege + inheritance
