I guess it's not all that shocking the party/ideology that thinks children getting shot at school is just the price we have to pay for freedom is also the party/ideology who are like, "But if MOST people PROBABLY won't die, isn't it anti-liberty to keep us from Waffle House?"
And let me say this: I know I have extraordinary privilege. I can work from home AND I can afford to be out of work should that happen. I absolutely understand that for some people, not working means financial devastation. But I'm not talking about those people.
It's not my intention to punch down at people in actual financial peril. I'm talking about the people who are not in financial danger but who just don't LIKE being told to stay home. Well, I don't like it either. But this virus is now the leading cause of death in the country.
Isolation's slowing the spread of the virus. But diagnosed cases are still increasing. They're just not increasing at the rate they would w/o isolation. It's easy, when stuck at home, to feel distanced from the terror as well. If no one YOU know has died, it may not feel real.
And in this era of shouting "fake news," when you can choose whatever source of information suits your world view, it's very tempting to just believe what you want to. But this disease is still killing people. Not just the old or weak. It's killing parents & doctors & babies.
Do vulnerable people make up a higher percentage of the deaths? Yes. But when thousands are dying, even the smaller percentages mean a lot of people. We have this thing in American culture where we believe in the fantasy of fairness & "it'll be all right." Reality disagrees.
You don't get to choose facts. You don't get to choose who lives or dies. All you can control is your own behavior, and so you should think about the consequences of it. B/c if we don't slow this virus, more people will die. And you're not gonna get a vote in who they are.
