The history of astrology and why it is haram in Islam, a thread:

Astrology - the study of the movements and positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars in the belief that they affect the character and lives of people.
often confused with Astronomy- the scientific study of celestial objects (such as stars, planets, comets, and galaxies) and phenomena that originate outside the Earth's atmosphere.
Astrology originated in Babylon, city in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq), it was very popular in the Arab world, Sahl ibn Bishr al-Israili (a Syriac Christian) was one of the most famous astrologers of his time, he served as an astrologer to leaders such as the vizier of Baghdad.
In the Islamic world,famous figures such Al Khwarizmi and Albumasur researched the connection between celestial bodies and their influence on terrestrial life. At this point in history, astrology and astronomy were not very distinct from each other and were used interchangeably.
As astronomy advanced with its strong empirical evidence and connection to mathematics, astrology became heavily criticized by Islamic scholars for its focus on conjecture instead of irrefutable data and it’s incompatibility with Islamic views.
Critic Ibn Sina (Avicenna) argued against the practice of astrology , he gave credence to the idea that celestial bodies could have influence, however he rejected the idea that the exact influence of the movements of the stars and planets could be pinpointed by astrology
Now for some Hadiths, what does Islam say about astrology?
From the book of Tawheed:
Chapter 29:What is said regarding Astrology (At- Tanjeem) Imam Al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih that Qamdah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah created the stars for three purposes:
(1)As ornaments of the heavens;
(2)As missiles against the devils;
(3)As signposts for the guidance of travelers. Whoever interprets otherwise is mistaken. Such a person is to lose his Reward (on the Day of Resurrection), and takes upon himself that which is outside his knowledge
Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A) The Prophet said, 'The Hour will come when leaders are oppressors, when people believe in the stars and reject al-qadar (the Divine Decree of destiny) when a trust becomes a way of making a profit, when people give to charity reluctantly...
The prophet (pbuh) said “ Allah has said in this morning some of my slaves remain true believers while some became disbelievers. Whoever has said that the rain was do to the blessings of Allah then he is a believer in me and a disbeliever in the stars. [continued]
Likewise, whoever said it rained because of the stars then he is a disbeliever in me and a believer in the stars” (Bukhari and Muslim)
One last note about astrology: there is a reason it rings ‘true’ -
Al-Bukhaari (6213) and Muslim (2228) narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: Some people asked the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about soothsayers.
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to them: “They are nothing.” They said: O Messenger of Allaah, sometimes they tell us something that turns out to be true. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:[continued]
“That is a word from the jinn that the jinni snatches, and he cackles it into the ear of his familiar as a hen cackles, but they mix more than a hundred lies with it.”
Ibn Abbaas narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu `alaihi wassallam) said:
“Whoever acquires knowledge of a branch of astrology has certainly acquired a branch of magic – he increases in it as he continues acquiring it.”
The Messenger (S.A.W) said:
“Whoever approaches a fortuneteller or soothsayer and believes in what he has says, has surely disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.”
(Reported Abu Dawood, declared saheeh bu Al-Albaanee in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 566)]
