A point I often try to make is about how language constructs the world in which we live. It shapes how we think. This has been very noticeable over the last week since Todd Greenberg resigned as @NRL CEO. All of the social and media commentary around who will replace him has
been “HE will have a tough job ahead of HIM”, “should HE come from a football background or a business background?”, “how much should HE be paid”, etc etc. This type of exclusionary language is the unconscious bias which is so prevalent in society, especially within the sporting
landscape. By using this language, we are sending a message that if you are not male you do not belong, or are not qualified. Sometimes it can be difficult, because we are so conditioned to think or speak in certain ways, but it is worth taking the time to check ourselves
and make an effort to change the language we use.
