Buckle up motherfuckers because I’m about to talk about Thor, however you wish to identify him at this point in the timeline (slacker Thor, bro Thor, Lebowski Thor, etc) #Endgame #InfinitySagaMarathon @chrishemsworth

/a thread
I know a lot was said after the movie came out about Thor’s depression and weight gain being plaid for laughs and I’m not here to fault anyone for how they felt about that, but I have my own take on it entirely
Thor feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. He carries the guilt of not being able to save trillions, bot to mention half of his own people, his brother and his best friend
Yes, he tries to put on a brave face and joke, but he’s also trying to drink himself into an early grave and the darkness behind the facade seems eternal
The jokes are not in @chrishemsworth’s performance at all. They’re in how his friends react to him. Thing is the worst offenders are Rocket and Stark and neither are behaving horribly out of character in treating him the way they do.
Additionally, given Thor’s mere existence as practically a god, it’s probably unsettling to see him having a human reaction to what happened. Tony has a hard enough time managing his own PTSD, we expect him to NOT fall back on humor when dealing with a depressed Thor?
It’s not unheard of for someone that depressed, carrying that much guilt, whether real or created by the depression itself, to simply give up on pretty much everything. Turning to drink and food to deal happens as does massive weight gain
And if the depressed person is either not looking for help or wearing a protective armor of humor, there’s not much one can do to break through to change their trajectory. You can try to be there for them, but they don’t always make it easy. They have to decide to get help.
From my personal experience, I related to the Thor storyline and felt it was well done. And I especially appreciated @chrishemsworth’s performance throughout. I’ll have a little more when he’s on Asgard, but I think that’ll do for now.
