“Sometimes life is more important than softball”
I posted this tweet a little over a month ago before deleting it due to the backlash I received from it. I posted it at the peek of the ncaa canceling seasons but this tweet had no correlation to that whatsoever. Was my timing bad? Yes.
But during the same time one of my softball players was really struggling. The teacher inside of me was screaming “you have to make sure they’re okay as a person before you can coach them.” And that’s what I did.
I invested my time and energy into learning about this player and about what they needed most at this time. I had to learn how to best support her.
A pro softball player once said “You [softball] are not who I am, you are what I do.” and ever since then I have the mindset that athletes are real people, and that every player has a story. Stories that are worth sharing.
Today, I celebrate this same player for being one year self-harm free. That is more important to me than any softball practice, game, tournament, etc. and I live by that.
April 25, 2020 - thank you. You are such an important date in my life.
Lastly, thank you softball. Thank you for the countless opportunities to use my talents and abilities to help others. You continue to bless me with some pretty amazing people along this journey with you. I am blessed.
