I have some ReylOld thoughts! (Thread) #1
I’m 36 so I’m not technically old! But it does feel like that sometimes when everyone on Twitter seems in their twenties or younger. I‘m an old millennial or Xennial and remember life before cell phones and internet but grew up w computers. AIM, livejournal, hamsterdance
#3 (oops see I’m old) I am in awe of younger people’s creativity, style, and mastery of multiple forms of online media. I have to google new slang and acronyms all the time but I enjoy learning it all the same. You youngins are so entertaining and smart!
#4 I honestly feel like generations are a made up construct. Noone is either immune from criticism or more deserving of scorn because of their age. Everyone is a product of the times they grow up in. It doesn’t make you special or unique. It just is.
#5 I feel like younger people should be listened to. I learn from my elders of course but mentoring and observing how younger folks see things gives me joy as well. As Yoda said “we are what they grow beyond.” Instead of criticizing why not dialogue and solve problems together?
#6 Age and maturity are not the same thing. We are shaped by our life experiences. You can be a naive and sheltered adult or a kid who has seen shit no one should see or had to grow up too fast. Empathy is actually free - imagine!
#7 No group is a monolith. It’s just our brains trying to organize disparate facts and make sense of the world. Sure, categories help us make judgments but it is also good to dig a little deeper and see people individually. Why not both?
#8 Slightly related tangent: It can never hurt to be quiet, observe and listen. There is so much I take in but don’t respond to and engage with & that is a choice. I can’t control how others behave. I can just choose not to join them in that behavior. Boundaries are our friend.
