Very sensible thread about using a Covid19 contact-tracing app(in a democracy),complete with arguments, counter-arguments & a conclusion that I agree with,
IN PRINCIPLE.
HOWEVER
(follows a note-to-self thread on the current debate around PEPP-PT & DP3T as I understand it),

there are many types of Covid19 contact-tracing systems currently in use &/or development &/or possible, & both knowledge & scientific/political debate about what these should be able to achieve, under which conditions & -precisely- how is evolving fast.

In Europe, the main contenders (for now)
are the PEPP-PT & DP3T projects.
According to the EU's stated guidelines in devising a good, transparent, democratic Covid19 contact-tracing app ( https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_20_670),

the right choice should be self evident:
"PEPP-PT: closed, centralised, privacy-invasive.
DP3T: open, decentralised, privacy- preserving."
(as per @kennyog's incisive summary, https://twitter.com/kennyog/status/1251486126331826178?s=20).

But -apparently(I'm NOT an expert)- it's more complicated than that: as I understand it,the two approaches/projects stemmed from a common source, but then split because of insufficient transparency & excessive centralisation within the PEPP-PT project.

Important figures working within or with it started to pull out (eg: https://twitter.com/marcelsalathe/status/1251045211767296002?s=20 and

The wave mounted:

and mounted: https://twitter.com/marcelsalathe/status/1252578497496780800?s=20,
and now it looks like whole European countries are moving to DP3P
(cf. the relevant text&table in the Wikipedia page I linked upthread).

While trying to unravel the history of this debate (only some aspects of which I truly understand), I found this text by Nadim Kobeissi ( @kaepora) extremely helpful:

(as a layperson, I'm making this thread mainly as a note-to-self. I welcome corrections)
