because I represent my employer even if my words are my own, I just had to delete a thread where I lost my shit at gamedevs once more complaining about C++ and using some less than chill language to describe people work on it. So I'm writing a *different* thread.
my theory regarding why senior gamedevs get upset about C++ changing is:

They are so used to getting their way and having authority over how they conduct business and treat the people under them
And now that several compiler vendors and multiple industries treat them the same way, they are absolutely enraged for being treated the same way they have treated their interns, their junior devs, and each other.
But rather than admit this, perform a self analysis, and try to improve their working conditions and take an empathetic approach to improving their daily life, its easier for them to shift blame to a non-person, an ephemeral concept that cannot defend itself.
It's the *exact* same reaction anyone who has ever had an abusive parent that doesn't respect your boundaries responds when you either do the same thing they did to you, or you actually enforce your boundaries.
There's a reason I continue to write papers to improve tooling and APIs for C++ and it's not for John Smith, Senior Game Dev at AAA studio who has worked in the industry since the 90s.
It's for the people who, despite all the shit they've been through, despite the burnout and abuse, still want to make games with C++ despite the industry's apathy, hazing, and toxicity. I want to make their life just a little easier.
Additionally, these arguments between general C++/standards C++ twitter, and gamedev twitter are completely useless. The discussions always end the same (or in my case you get blocked by a VP at Activision lmao), and all parties walk away angry and nothing is gained.
These arguments tend to feel a lot like arguing with conspiracy theorists. It doesn't matter how good your argument might be. They'll find a reason for why they're correct and you are, in fact, a complete moron.
Your options in dealing with them are to either be a complete dickhead back to them, or stay silent and move on. That said I saw an internet comment etiquette video about "either tell them to shut the fuck up, say nothing, or post pictures of shirtless old white dudes"
In the future, if you see me posting pictures of shirtless old white men in a gamedev C++ thread, you now know I think the entire discussion is fruitless and that y'all oughta know better.
Nothing will improve until gamedevs swallow their pride and show up the standards meeting. And the standard will not improve until a few members calm the fuck down in the meeting and stop referencing a colonial era boat no one but them gives a fuck about.
