Some younger friends I've made here have asked me why I was detained without trial in Uganda for one year in 2010-2011.
At the same time @RobertAlai posted these files here from the most recent WikiLeaks dump which provide pointers to my incarceration.

The WikiLeaks files obtained from US State Department documents are products of my work in 2006-2008 while leading the Muslim Human Rights Forum in investigations and campaigns that uncovered Africa's hugest extraordinary renditions by US agencies and governments in the horn.
/2
Our investigations trailed over a hundred prisoners rounded up in Kenya and transfered around secret prisons in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
In the files are the first of two reports entitled 'Horn of Terror' and a letter to then newly installed Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

There's also an MoU signed between Raila and the Muslim community leadership prior to the 2007 elections in which the renditions were made an election issue. The issue of the MoU created an uproar as a fake one bearing incredulous demands had been circulated ahead of the polls.

The fake MoU bearing incredulous agreements between Raila and the National Muslim Leaders Forum, was circulated with the intention of besmirching his candidature and driving a wedge between Muslims and the majority Christian population. My reports were appended to both MoUs.
/5
Raila got overwhelming support of Muslims against the incumbent President Mwai Kibaki. Raila became prime minister of the coalition government involving the two following mediation by former UN Secretary General Koffi Annan after the bloody conflict over the 2007 elections.
/6
The MoU with, among other issues, the return of the renditioned Kenyans from the prison in Ethiopia was the major basis for the support Raila got.
The letter in the WikiLeaks files reminded him of the pledges he had made in the MoU and the human rights concerns of the day.
/7
My investigations and activism around the US-led renditions and subsequent campaigns against the illegalities and abuses in the US global war on terror brought me into the cross hairs of the US government and irked Kenyan authorities that they sought Ugandan help to silence me
/8
In Sept 2010 I traveled to Kampala to attend court as following up on the rendition of several Kenyans to Uganda following the bombing of football fans watching the televised World Cup in open air venues. I was arrested and held without trial at the Luzira Prison for a year.
/9
The interrogations I faced centred on my work in the renditions and the collaboration I had had with human rights investigators of the GWOT world-wide, firming up what was common knowledge amongst us that I was held at the behest of US agencies in concert with Kenya and Uganda.
