thinking of doing a content on Titanic since it's the most challenging thing my brain can handle, and one of the most consistent Bad Titanic Takes I see is a variation on this
Like first of all, while there is no evidence that third class passengers were locked below decks as in the film, first class (women and children) survived the disaster 3 to 1 compared to third (women and children) biases were clearly at play here.
Secondly, like no? The movie does not demonize the rich wholesale? The story necessitated that Billy Zane and Mama Dewitt Bukater be horrible, but aside from some tone deaf rich dudes that's... pretty much it?
The movie goes out of its way to portray Guggenheim, Astor + Isador and Ida Straus (all of whom died IRL) in a flattering light, to say nothing of Molly Brown, who's arguably the most likable character in the movie.
But like, even if you don't go into whether the individuals were impugned, class divisions were a real thing on the ship that had life or death consequences. One way to drive this home is to highlight the third class sympathetically so we feel that loss as an audience.
But finally, WHO CARES IF A MOVIE DEMONIZES THE RICH? God forbid a movie demonstrate that yeah actually the rich do see their lives as inherently more valuable, and this holds truer the older money a family is (see again the sympathetic nouveau riche Molly Brown)
So maybe people are grasping at straws to put words to why they don't like the movie, but I'm a little surprised at how often i've seen this Bad Titanic Take, let alone that a guy in 2012 would have the stones to ding a movie for elevating the "poor Irish and unlettered"
