i am 100% aware this is not how it's gonna be. but. imagine, if you will, that boss has been in love with mek all along. and he never really got together with fon. instead, since she's an old friend of his, he reconnected with her and told her about his feelings for mek.

so she offered to help in a way that probably makes sense to the one brain cell boss possesses: by being his fake gf. so boss suddenly has a bunch of reasons to spend time with mek in a way he couldn't before (since he probably has the same fears mek has).

namely, going on a date. or, you know, telling him he doesn't know how to go on a date (?) and asking him for help planning one, thereby... literally going on a date with him.

or learning to play guitar for an audition that might or might not be real, just to be able to watch him play him the lovesong he so desperately wants to hear. and have him position his fingers on the strings when he fakes being dumber than he is.

i know, as i said, that it won't be this. it seems too complicated a plot for them, i don't think it's likely. but. it's interesting to think about, because things do add up.

we never see things from boss' point of view. all of his scenes are with mek, or seen through mek's eyes, so he might be misinterpreting everything and as a result we also might. the whole thing about voting for fon would also make much more sense.

not that i think being a supportive boyfriend doesn't make sense, but if fon wins the competition (provided there even is one) it's 1. a way for boss to return the favour and 2. a pretext for boss to always ask mek to do things with him and to help him

not to mention, all plans with fon always seem to fall through, and he never really gets to be with her once they supposedly get together. her being an idol is a good explanation, but her not actually being his girlfriend also is.

there's something so... weird about the way boss treats mek. the way he looks at him at times, the way he always seems on the verge of saying something he never ends up saying, the way he turns to him for everything.

when he said he's in love with mek i don't think he was half as drunk as he faked being, and he waited for a reaction before adding “you're my best friend”. he waited a hot second. his eyes were closed, he didn't see mek smile and he backtracked, same as he always does.

all of this doesn't prove the rest of my hypothesis necessarily, but it does prove one thing, i think. he /is/ in love with mek. and if he really is with fon despite it it's probably just because he thinks mek rejected him already and he doesn't dare act on his feelings.
