With Club MTV coming back tonight at 10PM ET after nearly 30 years (28 to be exact) in support of @VH1SaveTheMusic and hosted by @djdnice & @KekePalmer, I wanted to take you all on a walk down memory lane to revisit the original show hosted by @DTJB. #DanceTogether @MTVNEWS @MTV
In 1987, MTV was ready to expand beyond just focusing on music videos & concerts and began to introduce more distinct shows such as Headbangers Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, Remote Control & Club MTV.
Dancers would be scouted at & audition at nightclubs across the Northeast for a chance to appear on the show hosted by British VJ @DTJB. Marathon tapings would see the dancers taping 15 shows over 2 days at New York's historic Palladium nightclub.
One of the most famous acts in hip hop history, Run-DMC stopped by Club MTV in 1987 to promote their Adidas sneakers. @OfficialRunDMC
Pop acts from both sides of the Atlantic would perform on the show. One of which was Rick Astley who was regularly being played on MTV in the late 80s during his time with Stock Aitken Waterman. @PWLHitFactory
In August 1988, MTV would take over a contest winner's home in Adams, Massachusetts, and would tape a full day's worth of their programming from her backyard, including a special Club MTV performance from Belinda Carlisle.
Someone who would go on to be a staple artist for Club MTV in the late 80s was Bobby Brown with his major hits from the Don't Be Cruel album & Ghostbusters II soundtrack. @KingBobbyBrown
With Club MTV's popularity continuing to grow, MTV brought the program to Spring Break 1989 in Daytona Beach. The Club MTV dancers on the beach would prove to be a ratings no-brainer.
1989 would also see MTV deciding to take Club MTV on the road with the nationwide Club MTV Live concert tour. The lineup: Paula Abdul, Tone Loc, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Milli Vanilli, Was Not Was & Information Society along with Julie Brown & the Club MTV dancers.
The new jack swing sound would find a home on Club MTV with it regularly having songs produced by Timmy Gatling, Babyface & L.A. Reid, Bernard Belle, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Teddy Riley in rotation.
With the exposure from being on the show, the Club MTV dancers started getting booked to back up dance for artists and appear in their music videos. They would appear in videos by Craig G, Salt-N-Pepa, Gerardo, Kool Moe Dee, EMPD, Samantha Fox, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock and more.
One of Club MTV's famous alumni, accomplished actor & author Hill Harper got his start as a Club MTV dancer. He'd go on to star in such shows as CSI: NY, Limitless, and The Good Doctor. @hillharper
Before becoming a scene-stealing reality star on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Camille Grammer was burning up the dancefloor on Club MTV. @TheRealCamilleG @BravoWWHL #rhobh
1991 was the breakthrough year for P.M. Dawn and would see them performing their smash hit "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and had the Club MTV dancers in the palms of their hands.
The KLF's brand of "stadium house" would fit perfectly on Club MTV's playlist in 1991.
With MTV being in New York, Latin freestyle acts such as Corina, Lisette Melendez, Marc Anthony & George Lamond would also find a particular success on Club MTV in the early 90s.
