You're going to see a lot of tweets from me today about #SaveStudentNewsrooms because my student newspaper led me to where I am today, and I will never stop supporting the work student journos do. Just like professional newspapers, the pandemic has worsened their problems.
For students, the pandemic meant figuring out how to move back home, finding a job after graduation, etc. For student journalists, it's all that plus keeping a commitment to inform your community, even if it means running a "virtual newsroom" https://twitter.com/_alexhargrave/status/1254087004142387201
. @ThePittNews has produced more than 80 stories about COVID-19 since March. https://twitter.com/applerebel/status/1254090942262411265?s=20
. @UniverseBYU has staff working in four states and Mexico! https://twitter.com/UniverseBYU/status/1253778303837708289?s=20
I mean look at the quality of these memes that show what it's been like to be a student and journalist *in the middle of a pandemic*!! https://twitter.com/Leah_GrahamTMD/status/1254090029812547591?s=20
So far, 30 student-run newsrooms are participating today as part of what we like to call the unofficial Support Student Journalism Day. Alumni, consider donating to the student publication that kept you informed or gave you your first shot at journalism if you have the means.
