Advice for Young Coaches:

12) Don’t take recruiting personal. When a recruit commits elsewhere congratulate them on their commitment & be kind. Focus on what you can do better as a recruiter and pursue kids who will better relate and appreciate your program, region, and school.
Coaches put a lot of time, energy, & emotion into recruiting a player & their family. They have a vision for the kid’s success and genuinely believe in them. It can be frustrating if they commit elsewhere. There is no need to take it personal though. Just find a better fit.
The best way to validate a recruit not picking your school is to be disrespectful to them when they contact you. If anything, make them feel the love they’ll be missing out on by going elsewhere. We live in a transfer society; perhaps they’ll be available again in the future.
Some of the best players that you’ll ever coach will be the easiest to recruit. They want to be there, they have something to prove, they often times don’t jump ship when the going gets tough & they usually improve greatly throughout their career.
