My mom joined Zoom for the first time today to attend the Girl Talk Webinar but she was struggling to figure it out and kept interrupting the call with my brother so unfortunately she was removed. She’s been so embarrassed & questioning if she should have been there anyway.
I’m reminded once again of how inaccessible feminist spaces can be for women who don’t have access to mordern tech/social media, can’t afford to physically be in feminist spaces or have “academic” language to engage. And how this can bring about feelings of shame and alienation.
I feel so bad about all this because my mom is my biggest fan. She fully supports me & my feminist & LGBTQI organizing work, even if she doesn’t understand everything. She takes so much pride in me & my work and I don’t ever want her to feel excluded from my life or my work.
I’ve tried my best to reassure her that she belongs in every space that is created for women, and that not being able to access spaces is not a reflection of her worth but a reason why we do feminist work do that everyone can be in the spaces they want without barriers.
Taking this as a personal reminder to push all boundaries of inclusion and center the very people for whom we’re where we are and who continue to inspire us to carry on the work that we do.
She posted about the Webinar on her Facebook page 2 days ago. I was so excited to see her on the call initially before she lost her connection.
