Thoughts on the #Packers draft thus far in a thread...
I don& #39;t blame the Packers for trying to get the quarterback of the future. I said I wouldn& #39;t consider Jordan Love until Round 2, but I get it. You don& #39;t get very many opportunities to get the future of the franchise. Plus the fifth-year option for a QB is valuable.
The Packers essentially gave themselves two swings to get the QB of the future while still having Rodgers. If the Packers feel Love isn& #39;t the guy, they can trade trade him after 2 or 3 years and try again. They might not get first-round compensation, but they& #39;d get something.
Day 2 of the draft, however, was something else. So the Packers want to go to a run-first offense and take pressure off a 36-year-old quarterback. All good. I& #39;m on board. But they didn& #39;t need to invest into a running back and an H-back on Day 2 to do that.
Even if the Packers are running more than ever before, this is still the NFL and they& #39;re presumably still "all in" on getting to the Super Bowl in Rodgers& #39; twilight years. He& #39;ll still have to drop back over 400 times a season. And when the game& #39;s on the line, you& #39;re passing.
What better place to take advantage of the best WR class in years? Even with the run game taking higher priority, they still need a receiver with speed, something sorely lacking right now if MVS can& #39;t be that guy.
And what about the defense that got gashed by the 49ers, especially by the run? Day 2 would& #39;ve been a good opportunity to get a run-stuffing DL. And what if Kirksey gets hurt like he so often has? And who& #39;s the slot cornerback? And who potentially replaces King in & #39;21?
I like A.J. Dillon quite a bit. But he& #39;s a running back. You can& #39;t get him on Day 2? Okay, so settle for Mike Warren of Cincinnati on Day 3. You& #39;re still getting your big bruiser, albeit a lesser version.
I& #39;m in the camp that Aaron Jones is the best running back in Green Bay since Ahman Green and the Packers should make an honest attempt to keep him here. I& #39;d rather see the run game revolve around him. It& #39;s a risk; I get it. But I& #39;ll take it.
And an H-back on Day 2? Deguaria might be a nice little chess piece, but damn, I hope any NFL evaluator can find an H-back on Day 3.
