Negroes With Guns: The Black Armed Guard & Deacons of Defense & Justice

History Thread 🧵
Gather round, beloveds..

This story starts in Monroe, North Carolina in 1945.

Robert F. Williams, Marine Veteran, joins and becomes President of the Monroe Chapter of the NAACP.

Williams wanted to protect his community from the racist attacks he saw growing up in Detroit.
All throughout Monroe, Williams with the help of the NAACP are integrating public spaces.

This, of course angered the local KKK chapter.

This particular chapter boasted 7,500 members.

The TOTAL population was only 12,000.

Essentially EVERY white resident was a KKK member, b.
Whenever the NAACP would hold peaceful demonstrations and protests, the KKK would fire on them.

Due to the incredibly racist laws, there was really no recourse for Black Americans to get justice.

You could kill a Black person in FRONT of a cop and he’d escort you home.
All of this prompted Williams to write to the NRA to create his own chapter in Monroe.

His chapter was called the Black Armed Guard and they didn’t take any shit from anyone.

Up to 60 armed black men, ready to protect and DIE for their people.

They wanted all the smoke.
The KKK plotted to kill Williams’ Vice President, Dr. Albert Perry.

As the KKK opened fire, The BAG returned fire, chasing the racists bums off.

From that day forward, the City passed an ordinance that banned the Klan from Monroe without permission.

Got they asses.

Winning.
The next year, 2 white men were acquitted for the rape of a Black Woman.

Williams was quoted as saying..

“The Negro in the south cannot expect justice in the courts.

He must convict his attackers on the spot.

He must meet violence with violence, lynching with lynching.”
This got Williams suspended from the NAACP, but this would be the least of his problems.

Due to local protests from the Freedom Riders and a lowkey Race War going on in Monroe, Williams got caught up in a Kidnapping case.

This story was so ridiculous, b. Check this shit out.
Some random white couple drives into the black section of Monroe.

Mind you, we are in full Protest/Race War mode.

They’re immediately approached by residents, and it went as bad as you’d expect.

Williams intervenes and hides the couple in his house.
At first, Williams was gonna let the couple go, but he knew they wouldn’t make it.

So he let them chill until things died down.

However, word got out that an “armed black man” has a young white couple “held hostage in his house”.

This was bad, b. Real bad.
Knowing that law enforcement wasn’t going to believe him, Williams decides to do the race with his family.

He was quickly put on the FBI Most Wanted list.

Once he found out, Williams said “fuck this” and decided to leave the country altogether.

They headed for Cuba...
While in Cuba, Williams would continue his works with backing from Fidel Castro.

He hosted “Radio Free Dixie” which he used to speak against the United States Government.

He would write his best seller “Negroes With Guns” which would go onto inspire a young Huey P. Newton.
Back in the United States, there was another Black American Militia thriving in the South.

Born out of another town with a huge ass KKK population, the Deacons of Defense & Justice started in Jonesboro, LA in 1964.

By 1968, they had over 50 chapters throughout the South.
In 2003, they made a TV Movie, starring Forest Whitaker based on these men.
These Men would patrol their communities and protect them 24/7.

They put their lives on the line everyday to make sure their people were safe.

They were eventually investigated and infiltrated by J.E.H & the FBI.

A very common end for most Black American groups of this era.
Honorable mention: The Battle of Hayes Pond

The Lumbee Tribe are fed up with the domestic terrorism of the KKK and decide to attack a rally.

500 deep, they whoop the KKK’s ass, sending them fleeing like bitches.
