OK so if you want to make yourself a mask there's different materials which have different densities and I have a selection of fabrics to test which is best.

Some research going round online says that "quilting fabric" is best but that's like.. Not very precise
This is the light I'm using to test density (which is what's done in the study) which is an ikea desk lamp I rescued from a neighbour who was moving and didn't want it. Currently weaving a new lampshade for it.
For all the checks I found the best thing to do is sit on my bed and point the camera lens though the fabric at the light & window behind.

These are three of the Dutch wax prints/Ankara I have, it's a beautiful fabric but you can clearly see the light and even outside details.
The next two fair a bit better, these cotton blends are both old trousers: a plaid which let in a bit but no definition and a denim which was very dense, had to move the camera a lot to not just get a black picture.

(the bokeh is very nice isn't it?)
Here's two fabrics I had for cosplays in the past, a blue and thick red (tf2 jacket) the blue let in some light, especially showing the window light strip on the side but my red here lets in no light, even held up to the lamp (what I tried as first test)
And here's the materials I sent off for to determine what "quilting cotton" was supposed to translate to, the squiggles is a more expensive medium weight quilting cotton (75x75 thread count) and the striped is a cheaper dressmaking poplin (70 x 120 tc) and clearly poplin wins
I hope that this is useful to people who don't already have a fabric stash (some which I found under the bed while cleaning) and want to know which fabrics can be best used for making a mask. (afaik all of these are 100% cotton except the denim which is 2% elastane)
https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/rose-hubble-cotton-poplin-stripes-3mm-pale-blue-and-white-cp0145 the fabric I tested here is this one, I bought a meter because I can use it and make masks for others, but like, a fat quarter is enough fabric for at least one and a half masks for an adult. Which here is £2 (not inc shipping)
