It’s very easy to get frustrated with depressed people because the way they behave just seems so illogical.
Like yh your oven stopped working so your food is uncooked but how does that mean you’re a waste of space..???

D. makes your interpretation of events/people very warped. Everything becomes a negative reflection of yourself.
Take that example. Your food is uncooked —> You blame yourself for it —> Now you’re too dumb to even make a meal —> Question why you’re like this —> Conclusion: you’re just a waste of space who can’t do anything right.
All of those strong negative conclusions about yourself can happen in a couple of minutes.
When it gets really bad, it’s difficult to notice this pattern of thinking. This is why therapy is important.

It’s crazy because in the moment, ure not jumping to conclusion-ure just stating facts. But with the right help & time you learn to stop yourself & look at situations differently

First of all, your frustration is valid
One thing you can do is to try & help them identify their triggers? What do they do when they’re having an episode e.g. self isolation, drinking etc. There’s usually habits/patterns to what you do when you’re spiralling (from my experience anyways

Talking is so so important. Doesn’t necessarily “solve” the problem. Talking about my broken oven doesn’t fix it. But talking with someone may help me to see that the oven breaking isn’t my fault. It doesn’t make me a useless person. It was just a moment. I can move on from it.
By no means, am I suggesting to u to become a therapist for whoever u know is depressed bcus that is a LOT. Encourage them to try therapy. But in those moments when they do come to u, bare in mind that they don’t see things like you do.
