Thread: I thought I’d share some of Ireland’s famous castles, virtually, as we can’t see them during lockdown. There are quite a few in the Emerald Isle so I’ve chosen just a handful to reflect the country’s rich heritage & beautiful landscapes (Blarney Castle)
Let’s begin with Dunsoghly Castle, Dublin. Built in 1450AD, it is famed for its surviving ancient roof. The edifice is a National Monument & can be seen from the runways of Dublin Airport! Above the doorway are carvings of the instruments of the Passion.
To mark my 50th birthday I set up a special offer where you can purchase two artworks for a one-off €50(£45). Join the celebration! https://twitter.com/robertbohan/status/1253968614199263232
Not too far away is Malahide Castle. It was built in the 12th C & has been added to continuously ever since. It’s open to the public, haunted & a stunning indication of the lifestyle of the Talbot family. The National Gallery lends it many fine portraits.
Blarney Castle is in Cork & was Home to the Gaelic MacCarthy family. It dates from 1446. It’s said that if you kiss the Blarney Stone you’ll have the ‘gift of the gab’. You certainly need your wits about you to do it!
Bunratty Castle is near Limerick City & built in c1425AD. It is a magnificent building & guards the River Shannon. The Castle has been fully restored & includes an excellent Folk Park showing aspects of Irish historical life! It’s close to Shannon International Airport.
One of my favourite castles is the 15th C Ross Castle, Killarney. It’s one of thousands of Tower Houses across the Island & has been superbly restored by the OPW (Irish Govt) & furnished with medieval artefacts. It was part of my research & it has superb views of the Lakes.
Parke’s Castle is one of many beautiful Leitrim landmarks. The Castle started life in the 15th C when owned by the O’Rourke family. With the plantation of Leitrim the Castle was taken over by Sir Roger Clarke & he made major changes in 1628. An atmospheric pile.
One of the greatest castles is King John’s in Limerick City. It guards the City & the Shannon. It was built on the orders of King John in 1200AD. It is one of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe.
Cashel of the Kings is perhaps Ireland’s greatest fortress. It dates to the early medieval period as a Castle & was donated to the Church in 1101AD by the Kings of Munster. There’s a 1100AD Round Tower, Cormac’s Chapel (1127-34AD) & a Cathedral (1235-70AD). Otherworldly!
Glenveagh Castle is a new structure dating back to just c1870AD. However it’s sited in arguably the most beautiful glen on the Island. It is at the centre of the Glenveagh National Park. And when Garbo wanted to be alone she hid out in this castle.
Lismore Castle, home to a Duke, began life in 1185AD but has been continuously altered since. It’s a romantic place, mostly due to an early 19th C refurbish by Sir William Paxton. Today it has a respected contemporary art gallery.
Kilkea Castle began in 1180AD & was home to a branch of the Hiberno-Norman FitzGeralds. It’s now a hotel so you too can live like Silken Thomas. It has been completely restored & is everyones idea of a fairytale fortress.
Dún Aonghasa in the Aran Islands dates from 1100BC & is perhaps the most striking of the thousands of Iron Age forts across the Island, with its defiant outer walls. It also has an impressive Cheval de Frise (standing stones to prevent attacks). It is amazing!
There are 1000s of castles but the one that looms largest in Irish history is Dublin Castle where colonial rule extended across the country until 1922. It’s most important role today is for the Inaugurations of Irish Presidents. It dates in part from 1171AD
I love castles, having grown up in a village in Dublin with seven of them (2 survive). These were 13th-14th C fortified Tower Houses (including one attached to a medieval church, pic). To learn more look out for Harold Leask’s superb book.
This is the 12th C Trim Castle which is the largest Norman castle in Ireland
