With universities freezing hiring, firing faculty, asking underpaid, overworked staff to shoulder more burden, and putting students and professors in untenable situations, now would be a great time to talk about college football coaches being paid millions of dollars a year.
And maybe we could talk about that the highest paid public official in 39 of the 50 states is a college football or basketball coach, and what that says about what we value as a society and what it really, really means in a post-pandemic, economic crisis.
Because this is more than a talking point or something to roll your eyes at. It’s a commentary, an indictment, on what we prioritize and how this country has decayed, both intellectually and morally. It’s time to get serious about building a serious, fair, humane future.
