This is not to say that British Colonialism and Imperialism was not resisted by Northerners before the British fought to properly annex the North in 1903.
Khalif Attahiru, then the Emir of Bidda, Magaji of Keffi and of course Sarki Aliyu Mai Sango of Kano. There is also Muhammadu Mai Shahada of Hadejia and many more.
Then there were those who championed the campaign and struggle against both colonialism and imperialism immediately after the 2nd World War.
They were in contact with those who were involved in radical politics in the South. One of these is Sa'ad Zungur, the father of radical politics in the North.
He was followed by Aminu Kano, Abubakar Zukogi and Mallam Lawan Danbazau among others. There was also Dr R. A. B. Dikko (a Fulani Christian who was a Medical Doctor).
He founded the Jam'iyar Mutanen Arewa which the ruling class in the North hijacked with the aid of the British colonial officers and...
... transformed it into the political party that came to be known as the Northern Peoples Congress. But the Sardauna of Sokoto was very politically skillful.
Having sidelined a Fulani Christian, he brought on board many indigenous Northern Christians, namely George Ohikere, Michael Audu Buba (who was to become one of his best friends and confidant), Reverend David Lot (a Birom) Jolly Tanko Yusuf, Peter Achimugu and many more.
He unsuccessfully tried all his best to win over Olawoyin of Offa, Joseph Tarka and Kokori of Okene. He also tried all he could to win me on his side, ...
... and even went as far as offering me the position of Deputy Prime Minister, which Akintola did all he could (unsuccessfully) to persuade me to accept.
