i'm still not over the ova so this is a thread of what it missed out from the manga (not shading the ova, just salty + some of the parts are quite important)
for anime-onlys who haven't read the manga, please do!! it's chapters 190 - 260, and personally one of my favourite matches in the series (but maybe that's because i enjoyed the stageplay a lot too).
to start off, this scene right before the nekoma vs fukurodani match of kenma and taketora's banter. kenma can be such an ass sometimes...
next we have yaku's introduction of how amazing a libero he is, but told by nishinoya, yet another talented libero. it's said with such respect and awe, telling us just how important yaku is as a backbone of nekoma, which makes him getting injured later on much more impactful.
next we have konoha, whose parts got shortened quite a bit and made me super salty because this is konoha akinori we're talking about.
(this scene is in the ova, just wanted to show it again because konoha)
(this scene is in the ova, just wanted to show it again because konoha)
this part is right before bokuto's emo mode, where it shows that fukurodani is indeed not solely reliant on their ace, and have other just as powerful members who can score a point just the same.
and what was supposed to be konoha's COOLEST scene got cut out, where he was put in the spotlight and even got narration from komi (where did my konokomi moment go.... where...)
(i was so disappointed when they cut out this part you have no idea)
(i was so disappointed when they cut out this part you have no idea)
and that's it for the nekoma vs fukurodani match! i definitely missed out some things like how bokuto's emo mode did NOT last one single point... but i won't go into that in favour of talking about the nohebi match, more specifically kuguri,-
who's character development basically got cut out of the whole ova. he barely got any spotlight in the whole episode except for some parts in the middle and at the very end when he was talking to numai (also their coach didn't even appear...)
just before the match we are introduced to kuguri, who seems to be this uncaring and unmotivated character. he replies only in short answers and we are made to think that perhaps he has the same mentality as tsukishima of "it's just a club".
however, we later see that this is not the case. in nohebi's first timeout of the second set, kuguri is seen to tell his team about what he has observed about lev's behaviour. this reminds us of what kenma does during timeouts, showing that kuguri is not as uncaring as he seemed.
this part was also in the ova but i think it has to be mentioned. from here we can see that he is not a very loud character, but actions speak louder than words. clenching his fist is what one normally does when they score a point, because they are proud. him doing so in reply-
to his senpais shows that he is just as happy about scoring a point as they are proud of him, yet again showing that he /does/ care about volleyball and playing well.
again, this was in the ova but i feel like it must be addressed. kuguri's "biggest moment" (in the ova) so to speak is at this part, where he expresses his regret and frustration to numai. due to the ova having cut out most of his scenes in the front, we are unable to truly-
observe how he had developed in this one game. the full portrayal in the manga reveals that after this loss, kuguri feels the same frustration as his teammates, and manages to express it to his senpai. since he is usually quiet, him telling numai this means so much more.
what numai says also tells us that he himself might have wondered if kuguri really cared at all before all of this. (kuguri may have cried not just out of frustration, but also because the loss of the game signified the third years' retirement)
lastly, this scene, which i feel was a big waste to cut out. while kuroo does have a rivalry with daishou and is very aware about the unfair ways in which they played and tried to change the tide of the game, he acknowledges that they are strong. he recognises their strengths-
and sees them for more than just the dirty tricks that they used. he is mature enough to see nohebi for what they really are behind that manipulating nature, and i have a feeling that even if nekoma lost, kuroo would still say the exact same thing about them.
this was just meant for me to be salty about konoha and kuguri getting cut out but somehow it became so long... if you've read until this point then thank you very much for sticking with my rambling
