If/when I marry, I hope my marriage can be like that of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and her husband. Her biographers say that from a very early date there was between them a love more intimate than that experienced by many couples who have been married for a long time.
Her husband would often hold her hands as she knelt praying at night beside the bed. Her spiritual advisor said about her, "I declare before God that I have seldom seen a more contemplative woman."
When her husband died in a Crusade, she's noted for saying: "It is to me as if the whole world died today."
She fervently prayed that day: "I don't regret this sacrifice, although I loved him with all my heart's ardour. You know, O my God, how I loved this husband, who loved you so much; you know that I'd prefer him to all the delights of this world. I would be willing to spend my life
in misery, and to beg my bread with him from door to door, throughout the whole world, solely to have the happiness of being by his side! But I would not, even if I could, purchase him back again at the price of a single hair, unless that was agreeable to you, my good God."
Her husband was well aware and supportive of her charitable works – she baked for the poor, took care of the sick, and was completely uninterested in worldly pleasures. She only ever wanted to serve the poor, the sick, her children and her husband.
She was mistreated by the in-laws, even to the point of being cast out after her husband died. But she remained humble, she remained grateful, pious and happy. What an inspirational woman.
And if it's ever God's will for me to have a daughter, I'll give her the name "Elizabeth", and hopefully St. Elizabeth can (spiritually) adopt her and guide her and cover her with her beautiful prayers. This is my favorite saint. No one is like St. Elizabeth for me except Mary.
