okay so this person went on private but i'm able to still get a screenshot of the tweet, probably bc i'm on cache or something
But as a black caribbean american myself i'm here to tell literally any concerned non-black person that this tweet is bullshit
"da" (written or not) is not AAVE-only. replacing "th" with "d" is a common phenomenon called th-stopping. it's common in AAVE, but it's also common in many other american accents such as NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, as well as even in Philippines English.
I remember i checked this thread later on in the day and OP further said "I'm referring to people writing da not saying da"… this also is bullshit. People are allowed to write how they speak. AAVE has features found in other dialects. Let people write how they speak.
For example, the invariant be in AAVE is also found in many other dialects including multiple Irish dialects—as in, people that are literally whiter than bread. It is not unheard of for Irish people to say "i been" instead of "i've been" in casual language.
AAVE is a special dialect (ethnolect) but it has many features that aren't only found in AAVE. Barring anyone from writing how they speak online just because you think a feature is specific to an ethnolect that they don't "belong to" is probably worse than (…)
someone actually appropriating that ethnolect. As a black person myself i am also v wary of non-black people using AAVE esp bc it's frequently used as the butt of jokes ("DAE loud girl eating hot cheeto?") (…)
but at the same time, you have to be more refined abt this stuff & realise that literally not everything is within a US perspective. & that's another issue i have w stan twitter and stans trying to be "unproblematic" & "woke" to a point that they make bullshit tweets (…)
but this thread is already long enough so i'm not going to delve into that.
I'm sure someone'll see this and be like "Why are you going so hard he's only 14"… 14yo teens aren't little kids, they're not stupid, they know exactly what they're doing by using social media lmao. Stop it
