Passion Project/Long Thread: In 2018, @MelissaGomez004, @taveljimena and I started a campaign #SaveStudentNewsrooms in light of financial difficulties faced by student news. Two years later, those fears are heightened due to COVID–19. But student journos are still killing it.
Today, they’re highlighting the important work they’ve been doing to keep their communities informed, even as college campuses close and graduations are cancelled. My alma mater @TheAlligator broke news and put out a print paper remotely. https://twitter.com/Christina_M18/status/1253142823932739584
Student journalists @TheStandard_MSU are posing tough questions, including what this means for our mental health and whether this stress will lend to alcoholism https://twitter.com/TheStandard_MSU/status/1253346953661906947
The @bcheights compiled a timeline, chronicling how Boston College responded to COVID–19 https://twitter.com/bcheights/status/1253818061364301824
In my time as a student editor, getting the paper out on a normal day was a feat. I took five classes during the day from and went to the newsroom by 5, usually leaving at 2 a.m. Imagine making a paper remotely in such a stressful time for little or no pay. This is passion.
No one says it better than @FrankLoMonte: college journalism is THE ORIGINAL nonprofit news. Student newsrooms do important work, but they cannot do it alone. https://twitter.com/FrankLoMonte/status/1253856769215995905
There are ways you can help. If you have ever learned something from a news story, donate to a student publication. This is the training ground for many professional journalists. We’ve put links and donate buttons to a bunch of student publications here. https://savestudentnewsrooms.com/participating-newsrooms/
If you are a student-run publication outside the U.S., HI! I am based in London now and would love to hear from you and get you involved. DMs open or email [email protected].
