I am posting this because I felt a stupid need to confess to all the cats I have. It's too many isn't it
#Caturday
I didn't plan to have ANY of them except the silver tabby, Kite, and he is the world's worst pet. I acquired him when I was moonlighting at a vets, he was such a pretty kitten but he wasn't interested in humans. Ruth got quite fond of him, and then he got run over》
》I'm not going to lie lads, I was going to have him put down. He had a complex fracture of his - whatever you call a - cat femur, he spent his entire life outside, was uninsured and the surgery quote was £2500. I'm a country girl. A skint one》
》but Ruth wouldn't let me. Her big splashy tears oh god!! So there followed a nightmare few days where the vet gave me a pack of loaded im buprenorphine to give him, so that we could keep him pain free, whilst we all desperately tried to think of a solution》
》soon lots of people were involved, the vet tried all the usual charities but they would only pay for him to be put down. Finally to their eternal credit, the surgeon said he would do the lot for a thousand, admit, operate, pin the fracture, post op care...but》
》I still had no money.
At this point I decided enough was enough and was literally on the phone to the vet when my dad rang Ruth and said he would pay for the op. He's not a rich man, but he does love Ruth》
》and so Kite went off to cat hospital, my dad drove him, clutched in a carrier by a tearful Ruth. Then for several months he had to be kept inside in a crate, which he hated. But again Ruth rose to the occasion, gently and lovingly nursing him through the summer》
》at this point in the story it would be just great to have a touching anecdote about how Kite somehow repaid Ruth's loyalty. But, because this is real life, he didn't. Instead he became the most useless cat I have ever owned 》
》he lives outside, apart from when he wants food which is always 4am. He always jumps about a mile in the air if he sees any one of us, as if he's never met us, in spite of living with us for 4 years. He doesn't do laps. He screams if you pick him up》
》he also has a weird habit of sitting just out of sight near the dog so that she gets hysterical because she can't see him but she knows he's there》
》but it turns out that cats really are like family: you don't choose them, they just happen to you, and you have to do the best you can to get along.
And in spite of it all Ruth really does love him 💗
