Jack Nicklaus' career in ten tweets. The thread.
Nicklaus was born in Ohio in 1940. His father was a scratch golfer which led to Jack taking up golf at 10. He shot 51 at Scioto CC for his first ever 9 holes. From then, his game progressed quickly, eventually winning 5 consecutive Ohio State Junior titles from age 12-17.
At 13 his handicap was +3. He won the Tri-State High School Championship, recording his first hole-in-one. Within 7 years of taking up the game, Nicklaus was known as one of the best young golfers in the US. He won 27 amateur titles before age turning 18.
Jack attended @OhioState from 1957 to 1961, intent on earning his degree and working in insurance. His golf ambition was to be the first amateur to win @TheMasters. In 1960 he finished T13th and low amateur at Augusta, sharing the stage with the winner, Arnold Palmer.
Nicklaus turned pro in November 1961 and won a major as his first victory, doing so in impressive fashion. Tied with Arnold Palmer after four rounds, a 22-year-old Nicklaus won the 18 hole playoff by three shots and announced himself on the biggest stage. https://amp.twimg.com/v/ddecfb88-ffdb-48cb-a0d0-3c50f5196a41
Nicklaus was later named 1962 @PGATOUR Rookie of the year on the back of three wins, 16 top tens and 26 out of 26 cuts made. He finished third on the money list.
In 1963 Jack became the youngest winner of @TheMasters. He also won the @PGAChampionship & 3 other events. Nicklaus injured his hip during the season after hitting a shot from the rough, an injury he credits with career-changing swing alterations.
From 1964 to 1967, Jack won a further 17 @PGATOUR titles and four majors, completing the career grand slam aged just 26 at the 1966 Open Championship at Muirfield. It was clear to everyone in the game that he had become the best player in the world.
Nicklaus didn’t endure many slumps in his career, but after winning the 1967 U.S. Open, he failed to win a major or the @PGATOUR money list for three years. During this period, Nicklaus also lost his father. He decided to lose weight and gain muscle and got back to winning ways.
