Just finished Persona 4 Golden. What a phenomenal game. I don’t want to go into too much detail, but I prefer it over 5 by a long shot. Let me just say: a game’s story should be told through its characters, and 4’s cast has a chemistry that results in a well presented story.
Though it lacks the negotiations from 5 and the SMT games, Shuffle Time is still good as it lets you get a combination of cash/items/EXP/personas with a hint of strategy. The RNG dungeons are a pain sometimes, but they always bring a new experience when going back to them...
...and also don’t get destroyed at the end. This doesn’t have a main dungeon like Tartarus or Mementos, but it exchanges it with the rural sweetness that Inaba brings to the table. All the social links in the game have well-crafted and connectable plots to them..
...and make you feel more connected to the setting of the game; unlike 5, which in my opinion, brings weaker social link plots in exchange for better gameplay mechanics. Irregardless, the game is still fun mechanically, and is a solid 70 hour experience. Oh, and the music...
The soundtrack is excellent. Lots of fun songs and the fighting themes bring the motivation to finish the sometimes challenging battles. This game isn’t as serious compared to something like 5, but the comedy makes this game stand on its own, and I’d consider that a good thing.
There are lighthearted highs and there are depressing lows, but it comes into an experience that’s unlike any other RPG in the market. As Dunkey said for his Mario Odyssey review:
5/5- Lamáquina.
