I'm seeing so many well educated people getting annoyed at the ban of alcohol sale. Clearly shows you've never met an alcoholic before. So, let me tell you what happens in such a household.
With the lockdown, and everyone being stuck at home, consumption of alcohol is sure to rise. With increase in consumption, the money left for food and other essentials is bare minimum. An alcoholic would also use the money kept for medicines of patients in the family.
Having nothing to do, domestic abuse and violence also goes up. The slightest frustration would cause violence. Often times, the injuries from such situations are serious. A broken nose, a broken rib, massive bruises, bottles being thrown at the person, being hit with a belt/shoe
Apart from that, the alcoholic would also be consuming more alcohol than normal, leading to alcoholism or alcohol poisoning. And further worsening their health which would require medical care. Our MCWs are already strained.
I grew up with an alcoholic father who was abusive. I know what happens in such a home because I lived it.
During this pandemic, I already lost a friend to domestic violence because the husband got drunk and frustrated and took it out on her. He started beating her up and didn't stop.
So, when you ask for alcohol to be available, please check your privilege and think of the families for whom it would be catastrophic.
Does no one understand that this is not the time for trivial fights? That everyone is trying to cope and we should accept their coping mechanism? That we should be compassionate even to people we don't necessarily like?
That the world is changing and what we knew as normal no longer exists? That we live in a society, as a community and we can't be selfish assholes and only think of ourselves?!
I'm no longer going reply to any mentions to this irrespective of which side you're arguing for. I've put across my views and my lived experience. You're entitled to your opinion.
Be kind.
