I wondered how long it would be before something that was originally a heart felt gesture of support was turned into a way to shame and punish people. Human nature stinks. #villagepolitics #clappingisnotcompulsory
I'm ex NHS and absolutely commend and feel heartbroken by what is going on. But clapping is only one way to show appreciation, not THE way. And it is slowly being manipulated by a government who are letting NHS workers down, making it the focus. When I see posts on my village..
social media site by people who begin by saying 'Absolutely disgusted to see so few people clapping at 8pm, you'll be sorry when it's gone' . That shaming nature of it is dreadful. And it's decisive, which is exactly what certain factions want, to turn any blame...
..away from themselves, to turn the spotlight away from PPE shortfalls, care home deaths and front line worker deaths and make it about people not clapping on a Thursday at 8pm. I support the NHS, but I won't be bullied into clapping if I'm doing something else at the time.
I am not, of course, saying that clapping is wrong on any level, it's a beautiful, brilliant way to show appreciation and a much needed outlet for people feeling helpless and trapped and wanting to show love. But can we just have it as that and not some measure of worthiness?
