Thinking about #AnzacDay2020 & remembering my trip to Galipoli

If you haven't been, you should

To stand on the beaches in Anzac Cove & see for yourself the futility that lay ahead

The sheer cliffs rising up

The impossibility

However, there is a wonderful statue at Anzac
1/
Cove which moved me enormously.

A wounded Officer lay in no man's land while a ferocious battle raged around him

A white flag tied to the muzzle of a rifle appeared from a Turkish trench and the shooting suddenly stopped

A Turkish soldier climbed from the trench, picked up
2/
the officer, delivered him to the Australian lines & returned to his own side

It's not a monument depicting the ferocity of battle, enemies locked in a fight to the death - rather the embodiment of compassion

They were all just men who had to do what they had to do
