Sleepless thoughts: I think events have finally broken me.
- There are no controls - internal or external - on the president’s behavior.
- The federal government has no plan for dealing with a major crisis.
- The *post office* stands a good chance of just… going away.

- The leader of the Senate thinks it would be swell if States just went bankrupt.
- No federal planning is being done for conducting an election during a pandemic. (But the vote-suppressors are planning their little hearts out.)

- The Right thinks “why don’t we test-and-trace cancer or heart attacks hur hur” is the analysis the nation needs to hear.
- Democrats are doing their patented “fade into the background” maneuver.

- The Left will get around to doing something useful just as soon as every last Democrat admits how bad and wrong they are. First things first.
- The mainstream press is doing a wonderful job of telling us today what we needed to know four months ago, and a lousy job of telling us what we need to know *now*.
- And I can’t believe the press is *still* doing the both-sides stenography thing. Jay Rosen wept.

- The only plain citizens who are organizing are astroturf-funded nutjobs using confederate flags and long arms to protest being unable to get their roots dyed.
- Those common folk who are not nuts and have the financial cushion to act freely are profoundly passive or acting individually rather than searching to amplify their power by working in concert.
- I have to keep a stiff upper lip and hide from my children that I think they and my granddaughter are going to live in a failed state.
- I can’t convince myself not to care about all of the above, but my caring hasn’t the slightest effect on the world.

- The individual things I do to help others seem so small compared to all these problems.
- So I despair, and my disgust at my own despair - and at my self-involvement - increases my despair. (I believe the Catholic Church has noted this problem.)

I’ve always thought that epicurianism is the right philosophy for hard times: retreat, “tend your garden”, enjoy modest pleasures while you can. I’ll have to try that more. I wish I liked to garden.
As far as twitter goes, the best I can do is amplify tweets about books, blog posts, webinars, and conferences. Plus retweet humorous tweets. Not original tweets like this one.
